I told you last week about my friend Jamie and her husband’s sudden blessing of adopting a baby girl, right? I had asked Jamie if I could help turn her guest room into a nursery before they brought their little girl home and she said, “Go for it!”
So I did.
BUT NOT BY MYSELF! I had tons and tons of help. I was just the Bossy Pants. And I didn’t do it for a pat on the back, either virtually or literally, so please don’t compliment me. I’m actually having some regrets about telling “the web” about this project, because in retrospect I’d like to hide the fact that I spent so much time and a tad bit of money (mine and others’) on a foofy, wonderful project for a friend. Why am I advertising the service I gave? I’m not. I’m just so excited for these new parents and if ever there were an ideal way for me to serve others, it is through a project like this. It’s so much fun for me and doesn’t feel like work at all. So many of Jamie’s friends have asked about how the room turned out (including those who helped in some way). This post is a way for them to get a look without dropping in on the new parents!
Anyhow, here we go…
BEFORE PICS:
I was able to consult Jamie’s recent pins on Pinterest to find a direction for the room. She had two different styles displayed there- one modern and one more Victorian. I think we chose a soft modern look for the room. I hope that’s okay with her.
Here are the images that were my main inspiration:
And here are the actual after pics, taken with my iPhone. I won’t be going back to take professional pics, because a new baby lives there now and I don’t want to be all up in her action. And also- if I take better pics, this post might get more attention than I want it to (via Pinterest and whatnot) and I’m not in it for attention. For seriousness. Here it is!:
Here is what we did in there:
- painted the ceiling purple
- painted the walls gray
- installed and painted crown molding
- assembled the crib and rocker, which were delivered to her door and were gifts from her family
- painted the tree motif
- created the growth chart
- revamped old curtains that we found in her basement on a high, dusty shelf
- revamped and installed a curtain rod that we found in her basement (snoop around much, Angie?!)
- repainted the pallets shelves she already had
- created a birdhouse light on the wall
- created a birdie mobile
- sewed the pillows and linens on the crib
- other stuff i can’t remember
Repeat. I didn’t do this alone. Bigtime Helpers: Rick and Kelli, Francesca, and Natalie. Backstage helpers: Miriam, Sharon, Stephanie, Emilie. Ben, and Brian. I was about to list some of our “financial backers” but didn’t want to embarrass anybody, so if you gave us $20, we love you!
I am fully aware that the room is a bit incomplete. For example- they will probably add a changing table, a rug, and some more personalized art for the walls, etc. (Jamie is a lovely artist!). We wanted to give them the chance to fill in some of the details. Not to mention the fact that we ran out of time and money. Oh, and my husband may have run out of patience. (Note to self: {palm to forehead} Ang, you are not actually adopting a baby girl. Don’t forget to make dinner tonight!) Actually, the Manchild was really amazing and supportive about all the time I spent over there. He is, however, wondering to himself if me painting a friend’s ceiling purple is a need or want. I’m not sure…
There is one project that we have in the works still that I want to fill you in on:
This wall is the beginning of a lovely “alphabet wall display” that we are working on. Each of the ladies who attends Jamie’s shower will bring a letter or two to add to the wall. We will paint and decoupage the letters to coordinate with each other and with the room.
I thought this would be a fun thing to do at the baby shower, since I sorta hate sitting around at baby showers chit-chatting about bean dip and labor pains. I much prefer to do my chit-chatting over paint cans and saw dust! I’ll update you guys on the final product when it’s done! Here are the images that inspired this wall/project:

Anyhow, Welcome Home Baby V! We are excited to meet you and are so happy for your mommy and daddy!
{P.S. to everybody who is still reading this: WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE PURPLE CEILING?? Would you paint a bold color on the ceiling in any room OTHER than an child’s room (ie. in the dining room)?}

It’s just gorgeous! What a good friend you are! Think the colour choices are lovely!
(I have one concern…..think you need to move that cord that appears to be hanging down awfully close to the crib.)
I think it’s totally and completely WON. DER. FUL!!!!!! ♥ What a fabulous gift to give your friends! :)

It is absolutely amazing. So perfectly wonderful- I couldn’t have done it any better! Love it, and love you!
SOOOO GLAD YOU LOVE IT! (wondering to myself what you might wish were different and what you would have done differently, but trying not to torture myself with such thoughts.) we love you right back!
That is DARLING!!! I LOVE the purple ceiling! I would never have been bold enough to do it, but it is FANTASTIC! Great job to all the ladies and gents who gave of their time and talents to support this growing little family!! Oooops, you said no compliments…sorry…my backspace key isn’t working so I can’t erase it…darn it! :)
spankin’s for kylia! HOW ARE YA, GIRL??
You are something else Angie! I’ve always thought you were the bees knees, but wow. I know you don’t want praise for doing nice things for someone you love, so I won’t go on and on. Perhaps you’d feel better if we all told you how amazing we are too? Cause I did my BFF’s nursery too. Feel more comfortable now? It looks fantastic and it looks like you really hit the nail on the head with her Pinterest dreams!
we are both totally amazing people. it’s confirmed. :-) lol!
Looks SO good! I love the color choices – especially the purple ceiling! Great job Angie! Congratulations to your sweet friends. :)
Angie!! This looks amazing! I am one of Jamie’s sister-in-laws and I can’t believe how great it turned out. I know Jam was so happy that you were all there to help as they transition into being parents… hooray!!
I’m so happy you like it! We felt like jamie and her whole family would feel happy to see/know that they have a loving ward family here in VA to help them with their transition! Come visit!
We love you and that space is delightful!! Makes us {almost} want to have more babies!

me too. almost. but not quite!
To all that helped Angie… Thank you guys so much. It was a little overwhelming to think about all the work we had to get done. Most people have a few months to prepare – not a phone call the night before!
The nursery turned out so nice and has saved us a ton of time that we have been able to use bonding with Veda – and sorting through so many baby clothes.
We are so grateful for all that hard work and to those who helped out!
you guys DID have a LOT of baby clothes donated! we can rest assured that she will be well-clothed. guess what’s funny- the bishop told me that you guys own your house… so that’s why we painted the ceiling purple! when he was on the phone with you about the electrical problems he got this odd look on his face. after he hung up he told me that you had said, “i’ll call my landlord.” we all laughed really hard and said, “OH WELL!! I GUESS WE’LL BE BACK HERE PAINTING THIS CEILING WHEN THEY MOVE!” …and we will. :-) We had lots of fun doing the room for you and are so glad you are enjoying it with your wifey and daughter!
I am in love with this!!! Come to my house, I need you!!
on my way!!
This is so amazing!! I’m a sister-in-law too and it’s hard being so far away… so grateful for awesome people who step in and do the kinds of things we would have loved to do if we were there!! You did an amazing job – love the colors and the bed linens are beautiful!!
thanks, amy! we are so glad to have them in our ward and it was so fun doing this for them. joy ALL around!
I LOVE it all Ang!!! You are so talented in matching colors and patterns. I have grand plans for my nursery but it never comes out the way I envision it. Do you have any good tips for painting thick horizontal lines for an accent wall? I really want to do it but break out in a sweat everytime I think about it. Getting the lines straight just seems like an impossible feat. I’m trying to narrow down fabric for bedding too and it’s been hard. It seems harder this time around since I don’t know the gender.

Gorgeous. How exciting for your friends!
The nursery looks absolutely amazing and I am so grateful for you and your team for putting this together. Jamie and Bryce are dear friends of ours that we met in California. I was wishing they still lived by so I could help but when I heard all the wonderful things the ward has done for them it made me so happy to hear that they are loved and taken care of. Love it all and I’m sure Veda will love her room too!
